The Big Weekend was all about the bands - and they weren't shy to give their opinion of Maidstone.

Madonna stole all the headlines for her first UK festival appearance.

Quizzed by DJ Jo Wiley on the BBC, the global star admitted that she didn't know much about the County Town.

It is something of a departure for the star, who most recently performed in New York and Paris.

Fellow DJ Zane Lowe quipped on air: "New York, Paris, Maidstone - it would make a great T-shirt slogan".

Usher - who opened the festival on Saturday - was similarly unfamiliar with the area. He gave a shout out to Manchester at the end of his stunning set.

Despite the geographical challenges faced by the stars, they all seemed to have an intricate knowledge of Maidstone's weather patterns.

Jack White of The Raconteurs - who is also one half of the White Stripes - warned the crowd to "enjoy the sunshine while it lasts" with a wry smile.

Meanwhile The Enemy provided some social commentary about the town, bleakly introducing the final song: "Maidstone, this song is about you".

The song - handily titled This Song Is About You - begins with the lines "half the kids who you grew up with were pushing prams by the time that they were just sixteen".
