KENT'S golden girl Kelly Holmes turned down an invitation to a British Olympic medallists' ball to receive yet another gold medal at a reception at County Hall in Maidstone.

The double Olympic champion was on Tuesday night presented with the inaugural Kent Invicta Award - an accolade established to recognise her athletic achievement and commitment to Kent sport.

The nine-carat engraved medal, crafted in London and hung on a burgundy ribbon, was presented by Sir Sandy Bruce-Lockhart, leader of Kent County Council, and KCC's chairman, Cllr Kent Tucker.

Sir Sandy told an invited audience, including young sportsmen and women from schools across Kent that the 34-year Hildenborough athlete had been an inspiration to everyone.

He said: "Kelly's example to young people and what she has done for sport in Kent and people across the country is absolutely phenomenal. We are all very, very proud of you."

Kelly, who the previous day had won a Woman of the Year award, said she was enjoying the whirlwind celebrity circuit but treasured the memory of her open-top bus parade in Tonbridge most fondly.

She said: "I have already forgotten some of the shows I have done, but having my parade is something I will never forget."

Kelly, who is a keen supporter of the FANS scheme which gives Kent's top sportsmen and women free use of training facilities, said there was no question of her attending the British Olympic Association ball instead.

She said: "That's just another dinner, but to receive an award which was created for me is pretty special. I will continue to do all I can to support sport in Kent."

Ron Green, the Kent Messenger Group's general editorial manager who campaigned for KCC to formally recognise Kelly's achievements, said: "This is a fitting award for someone who has achieved so much. We are delighted the county has decided to launch this award scheme."

KCC's deputy Sarah Hohler told KM-fm why Kelly was presented with the special award...
