Litter problem on Hart Street from Maidstone's McDonald's drive-thru

Areas surrounding a McDonald's drive-thru in Maidstone were blighted with litter this morning, as it would appear users of the restaurant showed scant regard for the environment.

There was a number of food containers, wrappers and paper bags with the golden arches on, scattered on nearby Hart Street.

A nearby resident, who walks past the restaurant, on Broadway, on a daily basis said there is a lot more litter since the construction of the fast food franchise.

Maidstone Borough Council’s environmental enforcement manager, Michael Swoffer, said: "Early on Monday morning one of our cleansing teams saw that there was a problem with litter in Hart Street.

“McDonald’s are very good and have their own teams which do regular litter picks but this time we got there first and cleared the litter.

"McDonald’s are purchasing more bins which should help alleviate any problems in that area in future."

Franchise owner, Ali Hajj, confirmed that the restaurant is working with the council to put five new bins around the area.

He said: "We have a walking team who clean up our rubbish from when we open at 6am, to when we close late at night.

"We do everything in our power to keep the area clean and ensure there is not a littler problem."

Mr Swoffer added: “We encourage residents to let us know about any litter problems, which can be reported online at www.maidstone.gov.uk.

“We always welcome these reports so we can work with residents to ensure our streets are kept clean.”
