Maidstone Mixture leads the field

Maidstone Mixture, dubbed by some as the worst racehorse in Derby history, has been injured in training and has had to withdraw from Royal Ascot.

The horse, pictured leading the field at the Derby, is owned by Maidstone landlord Fergus Wilson and was due to race today, Ladies’ Day in the Ascot Gold Cup.

His jockey was to be Amy Ryan, the second-only woman jockey to race at Ascot.

Maidstone Mixture, a grey four-year-old horse has featured in national newspaper racing pages, after several poor performances.

Some newspapers dubbed him the worst racehorse in history, after he finished last in last year’s Derby, coming in 90 lengths behind anything else.

Mr Wilson said: "Mixture is certainly not the worst racehorse in history and the criticism has been vitriolic.

"In pub quizzes, it is always Maidstone Mixture’s name that people remember."

He had predicted that Maidstone Mixture would make a good start but "realistically just about anything would catch him".

Next year, when Maidstone Mixture is five years old, Mr Wilson plans to enter him in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
