New Maidstone signing Simon Glover

By Alex Hoad

Maidstone boss Peter Nott has completed the capture of Chelmsford defender Simon Glover.

The versatile former Wycombe, Dover, Welling, Folkestone and Ashford man, pictured, follows in the footsteps of his late father, John, who played for the Stones and England’s semi-pro team in the 1980s.

Glover missed much of last season after an Achilles operation but the 28-year-old was keen to join the Stones, rejecting a more lucrative offer to join another Ryman League, Premier Division side.

Nott said: "He really wanted to come here. It is his local club and the fact that his dad played here gave him a strong emotional reason to sign.

"He is experienced at Conference and Ryman League level and we tried to get him at the back end of last season but he wanted to stay as they were heading for the play-offs.

"He has great leadership qualities and will be a candidate for captain. We’ll use him in centre midfield initially but he can also play at centre-half."

Right-back Rob Carter will also be returning to Maidstone after leaving to sign for Bromley last August but Nott admitted it was "very unlikely" fellow defender Nathan Paul would be returning.

Nott said he is also close to agreeing terms with Welling for young strikers Jake Hobbs and Adam Marsh to sign on dual-registration forms.
