Lloyd Hume has hailed the capture of midfielder Alan Pouton as a "massive" signing for Maidstone United.

Margate were favorites to sign the ex-Gillingham and Dover player who agreed to sign for Stones after talks with joint bosses Hume and Alan Walker, as well as chairman Paul Bowden-Brown, following the 3-1 pre-season friendly defeat against Andy Hessenthaler's side at Ashford on Tuesday night.

Stones have been chasing the 32-year-old Geordie for several weeks and Hume said: "Alan has been away so things went a bit quiet. Andy recommended Alan to us, and he has an excellent pedigree, good character, and he will be a massive player for us.

"I think Margate offered him better terms than we did, but we are delighted to bring him to the club and he will be a big part of our plans."

Injuries forced Pouton to retire in January 2006, but Hessenthaler credits him with playing a big part in Dover winning back-to-back promotions.

Stones will start life at their new Ashford home against last season's play-off contenders Carshalton Athletic on Saturday, August 15.
