Police have been forced to shut off a major road after a man threatened to jump from a bridge.

Officers were called to Blue Bell Hill between Chatham and Maidstone at around 9am and stopped traffic while three police cars were spotted on Common Road bridge.

Kent County Council Highways alerted drivers to the "police incident" while one person on social media said people should avoid the area due to a "jumper on the bridge".

Traffic was stopped on Bluebell Hill (7563707)

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "Officers were called at 8.45am to reports of a distressed man on a bridge over the A229 Blue Bell Hill.

"The road has now reopened and the man has been discharged into the care of medical services."
