Maidstone and Medway could be affected by more bus strikes next week if talks between company Arriva and Unite the Union are unsuccessful.

More than 200 drivers walked out on Monday and last Friday affecting all service in the Medway areas as well as the 101 between Chequers Bus Station at The Mall Chequers and Gillingham, and the 155 between Clare Park in Maidstone and Chatham.

Buses to Gravesend and Bluewater shopping centre were also cancelled.

Representatives from Arriva and Unite met yesterday (Tuesday) and are due to meet again tomorrow (Thursday) to try to resolve a dispute over new timetables, which drivers and their union say are unsafe and unachievable.

Unite has warned that drivers could strike again on Monday if they are not happy with the outcome of the meetings.

Regional officer Dave Weeks said: “I can confirm that we met with Arriva yesterday (Tuesday) and have further talks planned for Thursday.

“Arriva have previously been notified of our intention to strike on Monday coming. However, this is now subject to the outcome of Thursday’s talks and our subsequent consultation with our members.”

Arriva confirmed the meeting took place and has been approached for a comment.
