Drinkers in Cranbrook will soon be able to order more than a pint thanks to the installation of life-saving equipment behind the bar.

The George Hotel will shortly take delivery of a defibrillator, which can be used by untrained people.

The equipment gives electric shocks to help restart the heart and was bought by Cranbrook Parish Council.

The hotel in Stone Street was chosen because of its central location and its 24-hour opening hours.

Francis Rook, parish council chairman, said: "The defibrillator will be vital during things like heavy snow when ambulances might not be able to get to us quickly.

"Come flood or pestilence, we need to be able to look after ourselves."

Martin Lyall, 49, the George's general manager for the last three years, said distance was also a problem for Cranbrook's 6,000 population in an emergency.

He said: "We're only about 10 miles from Pembury hospital but it's been known for ambulances to take 15 minutes to get here.

"The first five minutes are vital when trying to save someone's life."

A plaque erected outside the George will alert passers-by to the defibrillator's presence.

Mr Lyall said in an emergency staff would most likely use it, but customers would not be discouraged.

"As long as they're not drunk," he said.
