Mourners turned out to say their final farewells to a well-known Maidstone man this week.

Douglas Allen, known affectionately as Bruv, was a familiar face in the town centre and a regular at The Muggleton Inn in the high street.

The pensioner could often be seen chatting to people in his mobility scooter, which for a time had the number plate ‘BRUV’, and was described by staff as being friendly and talkative.

Mr Allen, who also went by the name Toby, was also a long-time supporter of Maidstone United Veterans football team.

Les Apps, who runs the club, said: “We have had some great times with him, he was really comical.

“He was a referee at first but when he started having trouble with his legs he would just come along with us to the matches.

"He used to carry this karaoke machine round with him and he would just plug it in and start singing or doing a commentary when we were at games.

“He was a real character.”

The service took place at Vinters Park Crematorium in Bearsted Road on Tuesday.
