Multi-vehicle crash blocks Royal Engineers Road, Maidstone

Emergency services were called to the scene of a three-car crash, that led to a major route being closed for several hours.

The crash in Royal Engineers Road, Maidstone, happened just before 8pm - several people were injured.

Two ambulances and two fire engines were called to the scene, as well as a number of police officers.

A Hyundai, A Fiat 500 and Ford Focus were among the cars involved in the accident.

Firefighters used cutting equipment to remove the roof from the Ford Focus to free a man.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital.

The crash caused major traffic problems coming into Maidstone, and drivers were asked to use other routes.

The road reopened at around 11pm.

People stuck in the queues reported drivers performing u-turns and driving the wrong way down the carriageway.

Road closures were in place on Royal Engineers Way and at Bluebell Hill.

Police asked drivers to use junctions five or seven on the M20 if they needed to get into the town.
