“In A hole in the ground there lived a hobbit,” begins JRR Tolkien’s famous tale about the diminutive, furry-footed, home-loving – and supposedly imaginary – creatures of The Shire in Middle Earth.

He never mentioned anything about them living in Kent and racing around Sutton Valence on New Year’s Day while sinking pints of ale – but perhaps director Peter Jackson could find room for that scene in one of his new films.

The Hobbits were just one of seven teams taking part in the annual charity pram race which drew a crowd of around 800 spectators last Tuesday, the glorious first day of 2013.

The winners were The Nutcrackers.

Organiser Lydon Davies, of The Queens Head Oddfellows, said money raised will go to Macmillan Cancer Support, with any extra going to Great Ormond Street. “It raises money for charity and it enhances community spirit,” he added. “After the race everyone disappears into the pub. It was a fantastic atmosphere.”
