Pipe smokers light up at a KM old folks' party in 1936

Smoking a pipe is something seen as a little old fashioned these days but here’s a picture which shows just how popular it was in the 1930s.

In April 1936, the Kent Messenger organised its first old folks’ party in the Corn Exchange, Maidstone, and a KM photographer snapped some of those taking part smoking churchwarden pipes.

Do you remember the KM old folks’ parties which were an annual event for some years?
