These were the scenes as police rushed to close off a residential area of Maidstone where workmen found an unexploded bomb.

The 16mm Second World War practice artillery shell was found on a construction site in Albany Street on Tuesday.

Police were called at 3.15pm and quickly closed down the road, as well as nearby Hedley Street and St Luke's Road.

Bomb disposal experts were called in and found that the device was not a threat. It was taken away, and the roads reopened at about 5pm.
