Two horses which escaped from a point-to-point meeting had to be destroyed.

The animals, which ran off from the West Street Tickham Hunt meeting, were injured after being hit by a vehicle on the A249 at Detling near the County Showground.

The animals were running along the road towards Maidstone on Saturday afternoon when they were struck by the vehicle at about 4.40pm.

Both suffered severe injuries and had to be put down by a vet.

Kent Fire and Rescue and the ambulance service attended the incident which caused traffic delays. The road was closed to allow the horses' bodies to be removed. The road was re-opened shortly before 6pm.
