A man jumped off Maidstone Bridge into the River Medway on Saturday evening.

Police were called to the bridge at 8.11pm after reports that the 29-year-old man, who was understood to be intoxicated, was threatening to jump into the water.

The man then jumped a few minutes later and was retrieved with a lifeline, kept at the side of the river.

He was conscious, but taken to Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury as a precaution.
