Neighbourhood officers in Maidstone staged a night time operation at the weekend to promote taxi safety in the lead up to Christmas.

On Saturday, November 30 officers checked that taxi drivers held the correct licences and that their cars were road-worthy.

One driver was reported for failing to display his licence, another prosecuted for parking on a double yellow line and others were warned in connection with causing obstructions.

An unmarked police car was also used to spot any private hire vehicles -only licenced for pre-booked fares - that were attempting to pick up fares.

The operation was designed to ensure the safety of revellers enjoying the nightlife in Maidstone town centre over the Christmas party season.

Police Constable Ian Jackson from Kent Police said: “We want people to be safe when they are in the town centre, but also when they leave too, and it is important to ensure that taxis are licensed appropriately and that no drivers are operating illegally.

“If using a mini-cab you should pre-book it, or keep the number of a reputable company to hand. We will be conducting similar enforcement again soon to ensure Maidstone continues to be a safe place to visit.”
