Police have raided a property in Brewer Street, Maidstone.

A force van was parked in the town centre street for much of the afternoon and left the scene at around 4.30pm.

One witness said he'd heard that the property entered was originally thought to be a brothel, which is why police were there.

But pictures have appeared online of what appears to be officers loading large bags of cannabis into the back of a vehicle.

"They were snooping around and obviously smelt drugs," said the witness.

The Maidstone road is mainly residential but is also home to a few businesses.

One former resident said: "It's normally a very quiet road. You do get some noise when the clubs kick out in the evening but this sounds very unusual."

A Kent Police spokesman said that a 51-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman had been arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis. Both are in custody while investigations continue.
