BOGUS builders have swindled families in the Snodland and Larkfield area out of hundreds of pounds with a tarmacking scam, police have warned.

Men are knocking on doors offering to resurface people's driveways for about £35 - but once they are halfway through the job they stop and claim that figure was for each square metre.

The final bill can run into hundreds of pounds, and families are left with a choice between paying up or being left with a churned-up driveway.

Incidents in Snodland and Larkfield have been reported to police, but it is believed the men are also targeting other villages in the area.

Acting sergeant Steve Griffiths said: "We are simply warning members of the public that these people are operating in the area and to be vigilant at all times. Generally if a deal seems to good to be true, then it is too good to be true."

Anyone with information about the bogus conmen should call Maidstone and Malling Police on 01622 608127.
