Furious motorists have been left gridlocked at South Aylesford Retail Park.

Bank holiday shoppers are reporting cars not moving for more than half-an-hour.

One driver tweeted Chatham and Aylesford MP Tracey Crouch: "Traffic at a standstill at Aylesford retail park yet again...something has to be done. 35 minutes and counting. #traffic #standstill"

Another, Richard Carney, posted: "Keep away from #Sainsbury's #Aylesford. Car Park totally grid locked. #sortitout#sainsbury."

There is some suggestion faulty traffic lights are to blame.

Officers from Kent Police's roads unit tweeted one driver who complained about the signals: "If this is a regular occurrence, we recommend contacting @KentHighways. We wouldn't have the staff to police this junction, apologies."

A frustrated worker at Sainsbury's who did not want to be named complained: "This is an absolute nightmare. This happens every bank holiday and we always get the backlash. It is nothing to do with us. The traffic lights on the roundabout are out of sequence.

Gridlocked: Sainsbury's car park.

"We have tried calling the Highways Agency to get the lights changed but we can't get an answer."

The longest delays were reported around noon.

The South Aylesford retail park at Quarry Wood is also home to Halfords, Screwfix, Smyths Toys, Currys PC World and Homebase.

Plea: change the lights.
