Workmen inadvertently painted a 'SLOW' road marking upside down on a major Maidstone dual carriageway.

Roadworks on the A249 have been taking place overnight during the past week, with closures to the southbound carriageway.

The mistaken paint job happened during resurfacing work on Detling Hill.

The gaffe, which was made on Tuesday night, was fortunately spotted and fixed by Thursday morning.

Kent County Council has said the sub-contractors who performed the work were from outside Kent.

Workers did not realise the road was a dual carriageway and painted the marking in the wrong direction, a spokesman added.

A Kent County Council spokesman said: "Our sub-contractor carrying out the works at Detling Hill quickly spotted the error and this was rectified on Wednesday night."

This is far from the first time drivers have been left amused and baffled by road markings.
