On-loan Dover defender Steve Watt is set to make a permanent move to Maidstone – and he could be made captain next season.

Watt, 27, pictured, plays the final match of a one-month loan at Chipstead on Saturday but United are in talks to keep the former Chelsea centre-half.

Maidstone boss Jay Saunders said: "It’s looking like we’ll be able to keep him permanently. His loan’s up after the Chipstead game and I’m hoping we’ll have something in place by Monday.

"Dover are trying to sign another centre-half and if they get someone in, there’s a good chance we can get it done or it could be that we extend his loan.

"Watty’s been brilliant for us. He’s experienced and knows the game and he’s a threat in both boxes. He’s a great lad and is captain material next year.

"When Tooting had a man sent off on Saturday, Watty pulled the players together and was chatting to them. I like things like that."
