Striker Jon Main leaves Tonbridge Angels as Tommy Warrilow trims squad

Tonbridge manager Tommy Warrilow had the unenviable task this week of telling four of his squad they were being released.

Striker Jon Main, winger Joe Benjamin and versatile brothers Ade and Tim Olorunda will all have to find new clubs as a result of the cuts made to Warrilow’s budget.

"It’s frustrating and disappointing and I am sure the board feel the same way," Warrilow said.

"But that’s just the way it is at the moment. We had a fantastic first season in the Conference, finishing ninth, and are looking to build on it but we are realists and we’ve just got to be a little bit patient."

Although Warrilow (pictured) has signed striker George Purcell from Dover, he admitted further signings were unlikely in the near future, leaving him with just 15 first-team players for next season.

He said: "I would like to add to the squad but I can’t at the moment and we’ve just got to look after ourselves, have a good pre-season and try to avoid injuries and suspensions.

Main’s departure is perhaps the most surprising in view of his past achievements in Angels’ colours but he scored only two goals last season during an injury-hit campaign and Purcell’s arrival has added to Warrilow’s striking options.

Warrilow said: "I will not be looking to add to the signing of George Purcell unless somebody of his quality comes along, can fit into our structure and strengthen our squad."
