Subway's a floody nuisance

Walkers may soon need swimming goggles and armbands to negotiate their way through a flooded underpass.

For nearly two months, the entrance to the subway outside the new Bridges bar has been submerged in deep rain water.

Cllr David Pickett (Lib Dem, Bridge ward), said the huge pool at the foot of the subway’s steps was the biggest he has ever seen and urged Kent County Council to tackle the problem.
He said: “The water’s so deep, if a small child were to fall down the steps it could be very dangerous."
He added: “I appreciate we’ve had more rain than ever, but it doesn’t excuse the fact the drains are blocked.”
KCC drainage and flood manager Kathryn Lewis said "exceptional weather conditions" were to blame for the flood.

She added:"We cleaned the drainage system at the subway on 22 June. "Further cleansing work is scheduled to take place this week."
