Subways that thousands of pedestrians have walked through beneath Maidstone's gyratory system have been bricked up.

The work is the latest part of the £5.7m project to revamp the Maidstone Bridges one-way system and ease traffic congestion around the town.

The subways will soon be filled with foam concrete and new brickwork will replace the current grey bricks.

Work on the gyratory system started at the beginning of June and will continue until at least November.

Two additional northbound lanes will be added to Fairmeadow, allowing traffic heading towards Medway to avoid part of the one-way system and hopefully cutting queuing time by up to 74 seconds.

Lane closures have been mainly restricted to outside rush hour to reduce congestion, apart from one period earlier this month.
