OLD fashioned sweets will soon be sold at Fremlin Walk from the back of a 1970s van.

The Sweet Dreams venture is the brainchild of Paul Weeks, 55, who was granted a licence by Maidstone Council last week.

He will take up residence this weekend at the Fremlin Walk bandstand and will be there from Thursdays to Sundays.

Sweets on offer will include jelly babies, fudge and candy floss.

Mr Weeks and his wife Nina, have sold toffee apples from bikes and tricycles at events across Kent as a part-time venture for many years, but the addition of the van marks his business becoming full-time.

The couple travelled to Poitiers in France, to collect the 1971 Citroen H van, before driving it back to the UK and lovingly restoring it.

Mr Weeks, who lives in Sittingbourne, said: “I will have all the traditional sweets that people remember and there is a real nostalgia for them, even in the current economic situation.”

Toffee apples are one of his best sellers and his personal favourites are liquorice and fudge.

“But I don’t get the attraction with floral gums,” he added.

“They taste like washing powder but people seem to love them.”
