ONE of the few players from Maidstone United’s Football League days still plying their trade in the lower leagues has offered his services to the Stones.

Steve Rutter, now 34, made one appearance for the Stones in a 1-1 draw at Blackpool during the 1991/92 season.

Rutter, who went on to play for Kettering Town and was with Southern League side Gresley Rovers last season, has recently moved back to Kent and contacted club chairman Paul Bowden Brown with a view to rejoining his old side.

Maidstone manager Jim Ward confirmed that he had invited Rutter to join in pre-season training. The other remnants of Maidstone’s Division Four side still playing professionally are Derby’s Warren Barton and Farnborough’s Kenny Charlery.

Locally Jason Lillis still plays for Lordswood, while Alan Tutton is at Dartford and Mark Beeney and Matt Toms manage Sittingbourne and Whitstable respectively.
