Maidstone boss Jay Saunders says he needed more from Liam Enver-Marum after releasing the striker.

Enver-Marum scored a respectable five goals in 16 appearances for United but didn’t offer the targetman qualities the manager was looking for.

Saunders said: “I just felt I need a bit more from my frontman.

“He's a big lad, I think he could use his body a lot better than he does and work a little bit harder.

“He had a good goal return but we're in a position where we need a bit more than that and I just felt we had players in front of him.”

Last-minute complications prevented Maidstone signing a new striker in time for Saturday’s National League game at Bromley - but they will attempt to revive the deal.

The Lillywhites showed the importance of an effective big man, with Adam Cunnington opening the scoring and proving a handful for United’s back four.

Saunders said: “I do think we need a big man. You only have to look at Cunnington for Bromley.

“Especially with the pitches turning, when there's not going to be loads and loads of football at times, we need a big man.

“We've been crying out for one since Jay May left and it's something we're working on.

“They're not easy to find. I thought I had one and I thought it would be done by the weekend but it kind of all fell through, which was a bit of a nightmare.

“It's something we're hoping to revisit but we're probably going to have to wait a few days before we know.”
