Match-winner Jay May was back to his best in Maidstone's 1-0 victory at Hemel Hemsptead.

Last year's top scorer was substituted in the defeat by Oxford at the weekend.

He responded by heading home his first goal of the new season on Tuesday night.

United boss Jay Saunders said: "Jay struggled a bit on Saturday but the good thing with him is he knows when he's had a bad game.

"He said himself his touch wasn't there and he wasn't at it.

"Last night he was back to his best, once we started using him right.

"He bullied their centre-halves, held the ball up, brought others into play and scored a great header.

"I'm really pleased for him. He was massively important for us last year and he'll be just as important this year."

May celebrated his goal with travelling Stones fans and Saunders added: "The supporters were different class from first minute to last.

"They got behind the lads and it makes such a difference.

"It's never an easy ground to get to but we must have had 200 fans there. They were brilliant."
