Maidstone have one point from their opening three National League games after losing at Leyton Orient.

United trailed to David Mooney’s header on the hour but thought they’d equalised when Delano Sam-Yorke struck in the 89th minute.

Celebrations were cut short when the linesman flagged for offside and substitute Romauld Boco added an injury-time second for Orient.

Maidstone made two changes to the side beaten at Ebbsfleet, with Jack Paxman replacing the suspended Stuart Lewis and Alex Wynter coming in for Alex Finney, who missed out with a groin injury.

Orient had plenty of first-half possession but were neat and tidy rather than threatening and when they did get in decent positions, the final ball was missing.

They carved out just the one genuine chance and that came late in the half as David Mooney’s flick found ex-West Ham wideman Jobi McAnuff, who cut inside but barely troubled Lee Worgan.

Maidstone saw nowhere near as much of the ball but worked hard all over the pitch and actually had the better chances.

In just the third minute, Joe Pigott’s header from a Joe Anderson cross was parried by Charlie Grainger, with Delano Sam-Yorke bundling keeper and ball over the line from the follow-up - the goal inevitably chalked off.

There was a big double chance for the Stones just before the 20-minute mark after Sam-Yorke’s pass split the defence and sent Pigott clear.

Pigott, marked by big ex-Wolves defender George Elokobi, inadvertently played the ball against himself but looked a good bet to score only for Grainger to block well before Tom Wraight sent the follow-up over.

Orient upped the intensity after half-time and were in on goal when Wynter was beaten by a bounce but Macaulay Bonne dragged his shot wide.

Wraight had a strike blocked and headed over Seth Twumasi’s cross at the other end before Orient took the lead on the hour.

James Dayton played a one-two with Jake Caprice out on the right before swinging over a lovely cross which Mooney headed home.

It was diffcult for Maidstone in attack - they weren’t getting much change of Elokobi - so with just over 15 minutes left, Jay Saunders pushed Sam-Yorke up front alongside Pigott in a change of system.

Moments later, though, it should have been 2-0 with Bonne missing the target after Dayton squared in the six-yard box.

With Maidstone pushing, Wynter just needed any sort of touch on Hare’s cross and the visitors would have levelled.

Then, with a minute left, Sam-Yorke thought he’d levelled after Pigott’s shot was parried but the linesman ruled it out.

Boco was sent clear to add Orient’s second in the first minute of added time.

Maidstone: Worgan, Twumasi, Anderson, Hare, Wynter, Prestedge (Willard 74mins), Reason, Paxman, Sam-Yorke, Pigott, Wraight (Richards 80mins). Subs not used: Taylor, Okuonghae, Phipps.

Attendance: 5,085 (595 Stones fans).
