Harry Wheeler hailed his defence after Maidstone's victory at Aldershot.

Two 1-0 away wins in four days have lifted United two points clear of the National League drop zone, in 18th place.

The latest shut-out, at Aldershot last night, was a classic smash-and-grab raid after Blair Turgott's first-half opener.

The Shots were all over Maidstone in the second half but the visitors defended superbly to leave the Rec with three points.

Wheeler's decision to move Simon Walton into a back three has been a big factor in back-to-back clean sheets.

The Stones manager said: "We were resilient, strong, organised, a few things we promised we'd be when we came in but we've got to do it over a longer period.

"The ability was there with Will De Havilland and Alex Finney and I said they're very good centre-halves.

"But Simon Walton's come in between the two of them and helped them, and they've helped him. As a three, they're excellent."

Walton is best known as a midfielder but looks at home in defence.

Wheeler added: "He played there for Crawley for a while in the league and did a good job and I know what he can bring in there."

It looked a matter of time before Aldershot scored but Maidstone held their nerve.

Wheeler said: "You've just got to trust your players.

"All it's about is trusting players and if they do what they're capable of for the duration then we'll be fine.

"If they switch off, sometimes it happens and you take it on the chin.

"Luckily it didn't and again their concentration levels were fantastic."
