DECISION MAKER: Paul Bowden-Brown

MAIDSTONE United FC chairman Paul Bowden-Brown is expected to reveal a new management team for the club on Tuesday.

After a season of massive disappointment for the Stones, Bowden-Brown is discussing the club’s future with general manager Bill Williams before revealing the name of his new team boss.

It has become clear that current manager Mal Watkins is considering his position and it is understood he wants to step down for personal reasons.

Bowden-Brown is keen for him to remain with the Stones in a coaching role but Watkins says his top priorities for the summer are to spend more time with his family and sort out his career away from football.

The hot favourite to take over is former Tonbridge Angels assistant manager Lloyd Hume, who was second in command to Alan Walker at the Angels and Bromley last season.

It is likely Walker will still be involved at Maidstone in some capacity next season if his KCFA commitments allow.

Watkins took over from Jim Ward in December and under his supervision Maidstone lost just one league game.

Bowden-Brown paid tribute to his record, saying: “Mal has done a wonderful job since taking over in difficult circumstances but we have to look forward and get out of the Kent League.”

He refused to confirm who the new manager would be but said the person he has in mind has the contacts to get the club promoted before the Stones return home to a new stadium.

He said: “We have lined up at least eight quality players who will come in and get the job done once and for all. I felt very let down by the attitude of some of the players this year. I want to make sure we make no mistakes in winning the Kent League next season."
