John Still is in no rush to complete his Maidstone squad for the new season.

Head of football Still wants two more midfielders but will take his time over any deals.

He's confirmed talks with last season's player-of-the-year Michael Phillips but also has other options.

Still said: "I'm still looking for one, maybe two, midfield players.

"We missed out on a couple but we've got others we're talking to.

"I'm not rushing, I'm just waiting.

"There's still three weeks before the season starts.

"I'd like to get an experienced one and a younger one.

"I like Michael Phillips but I don't know about that one.

"We decided to clear the decks at the end of last season.

"Some players didn't want to stay, which is fair enough, but there are a few that have asked us.

"I have spoken to Michael but I just want to stand still for a week or so.

"We've got to get the right ones."

Maidstone host Bromley on Saturday (3pm) and visit Dover on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Pre-season training has centred purely on fitness so far with Still relying on tried and trusted methods to get players up to speed.

He said: "I work to a formula that has always worked for me.

"Why am I going to change? I'm not going to change how I prepare.

"Maybe it's a bit shorter now but I was determined that the first two weeks would be hard work and the next two weeks would be more with the ball.

"We had two sessions yesterday and we've got a really tough session today, even though we're playing Saturday.

"We're doing that because we haven't got to win on Saturday - we need to win when the season starts. That's how I look at it."
