Maidstone United had to fend off plenty of other clubs to keep hold of Michael Phillips.

Both he and Jack Paxman have signed up for next season.

Midfielder Phillips joined the Stones in March, after securing his release from Crystal Palace and Stones boss Jay Saunders said: “In that short spell I saw so much potential and I know there’s more to come.

“He’s showed he’s got more than what it takes to make the step up to men’s football.

“There were a lot of clubs in for him but he’s enjoyed his time here and I am delighted to get his signature.”

Paxman has been with the Stones since signing from Witham Town in March 2015, becoming a fans’ favourite and making 123 appearances for the club.

“He’s improved year-on-year and I still think there’s more to come from him,” Saunders said.

“With a solid pre-season he will have a big part to play for us.”

Chelmsford City, meanwhile, are quickly assembling a who’s who of former Stones players.

Jai Reason has become the third player from last season’s squad to sign for them, following Tom Wraight and Joe Anderson to the Essex club.

Reason made 54 appearances for the Stones last season.

Talking about his departure, Saunders said: “Jai’s been an absolute pleasure to have at the club. His experience and workrate is second-to-none and gave me everything week in, week out.

“On and off the pitch he’s been a true professional and I wish him every success for the future.”

Chelmsford also have former Stone Alex Akrofi on their books.

Maidstone will play pre-season friendlies at Folkestone Invicta on July 9 and Sevenoaks Town on July 24 before hosting Dulwich Hamlet on July 28.
