Robson, 34, is a 10-year veteran tank driver who has served in Iran, Iraq and the Falklands, Maidstone Crown Court heard.

He admitted a charge involved in whipping his victim with a belt, strangling her, threatening her with a weapon and also threatening to kill himself.

Robson also pleaded guilty to assaulting Ms Salter causing her actual harm on July 19 and common assault on the following day.

His coercive and controlling behaviour took place between November and July, according to the charge.

Judge Philip Statman heard it also involved threats to kill her dog and forcing the victim to move away from work and her family - "and destroying the relationship with her mother".

Ms Salter was present in court to hear his pleas and is expected to return for his sentencing in November.

During the 15 minute hearing Robson looked over at his victim and mouthed: "Are you alright?" before winking as he returned to the cells.

Robson has been remanded in custody.

Defence counsel Christopher Whitehouse said his client was suffering from PTSD and is receiving medical treatment.
