Fears deadly algae was present in lakes at Leybourne have been addressed today after the council confirmed there is no cause for concern.

We reported last week how visitors to Leybourne Lakes thought they had spotted blue green algae, which can cause illness and skin conditions.

This prompted warnings to steer clear of the water and the erection of signs.

But Darren Lanes, Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council’s Head of Leisure Services, today said: “Results of tests for blue green algae at Leybourne Lakes Country Park returned today show there is no cause for concern and so precautionary warnings signs have now been taken down.

"The council continues to monitor the lakes at the park and will inform the public of any changes to water quality.”

Blue green algae, also known as Cyanobacteria, is present in many streams, rivers and lakes and when its numbers grow can produce toxins. In May, this lead to the closure of Conningbrook Lakes in Ashford.
