Friends and neighbours of a woman who died after a fire have been raising money to support the family.

A woman in her 60s was pronounced dead after being after being rescued from the blaze in Spitfire Road, West Malling, near Kings Hil at around 9pm on Saturday.

A child was also treated for a leg injury and smoke inhalation and a dog died.

A 51-year-old man from West Malling has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Neighbours Natalie Page, Kelly Woodger, and Charlene Woodger opened a page on the website GoFundMe to pull together money to help the family pay for funeral costs and get back on their feet.

In less than 24 hours since been set up, the page has raised £445 of its £500 goal.

"I’ve set up this page because I know these people. I would not want this to happen to anyone, let alone on your own estate," said page creator Natalie Page.

"This has brought everyone together, it’s amazing what everyone has done, and the page has already been shared all over Facebook, it’s probably gone all over the world. Everyone is donating money to help. Everyone is still in shock."

A second page has also raised £355 of a £1,000 goal.

The fire has left the community shocked.

Rose Tompsett who lives nearby said: "I was woken up by all the commotion. Quite a few neighbours went round to try and knock the door down and get them out. I’d walked out to see what was going on and just said ‘oh my god.’

"I couldn’t stand to watch it anymore so I went back inside. You see fires on the telly all the time but you don’t expect to see it on your estate. It’s a pretty tight-knit community here, everyone tries to look out for each other. It does seem to have brought people together. But it’s a big shock, just horrible."

Another neighbour, Michelle Prebble, said: “There was a lot of shouting so we looked out and saw this huge fire, so my husband went over and knocked the door down. He is quite big but it was very brave. A few people tried to get in but were knocked back by the smoke.

"Most of the road was out at the time, it was pretty dramatic."
