A man put a fire which broke out in his house out using a garden hose on Friday evening.
A dishwasher had caught light at the property in Offham Road, West Malling at just before 7pm.
He had used the garden hose to put out the fire, which was out by the time firefighters arrived, although suffered smoke inhilation doing it.
A fire and rescue spokesman said it was likely the machine had developed a fault.
But added: "We do ask people to consider the effects of breathing in smoke when putting out a fire themselves."
