The Queen’s 90th birthday was celebrated in style with tea, swing dancing and a Spitfire flypast.

East Peckham Village Hall was awash with patriotic red, white and blues for the party on Saturday, which was attended by more than 150 senior citizens.

It was put on by Brookside Garden Centre owner Terry Shead MBE and wife Beryle.

A bagpiper played as guests took their seats for tea in the Bush Road hall, followed by performances from the East Peckham Lindy Hoppers and a sing song.

And the Pearly King of Mile End and the Pearly Queen of Highgate also joined in with the knees up. The Spitfire was delayed by bad weather, but appeared, doing somersaults and loop-the-loops to the delight of the guests.

The organisers even received a letter from the Queen herself, who wrote wishing those attending a memorable afternoon, in reply to a message telling her about the party and wishing her a happy ninetieth year.

Helper Paul Harfleet said: “It was lovely to see how much everyone enjoyed it. Everyone was cheering and waving their flags while the Spitfire went over. It was a fantastic event.”
