A country lane has been shut after asbestos was dumped there.

Kent County Council was called to Mereworth last night after car parts were left in Swanton Lane.

But specialist clearance had to be arranged after a gas bottle and asbestos was found among the waste.

Fly tippers dumped car parts along Swanton Lane

When materials that contain asbestos are disturbed or damaged, dangerous fibres can be released into the air, which can cause serious diseases if inhaled.

The road has been closed between Seven Mile Lane and Stan Lane. It is not yet known when it will re-open.

The maximum penalty for flytipping is a £50,000 fine or a six month prison sentence.
