Kent Police is reminding residents to be vigilant after rogue traders reportedly overcharged a pensioner for work at his home.

On Monday, July 2, a man in his 70s was visited by three men who offered to clean his driveway with a jet washer. He agreed to pay them by cheque but when they finished it is alleged they demanded over £300 in cash.

The pensioner, who lives in East Peckham, paid the money plus an additional amount to cover fuel costs after the men refused to leave without it.

District Chief Inspector, Peter Steenhuis said: "We are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. In the meantime I would urge residents to be alert if a tradesperson visits without an appointment and suggests work needs to be completed on the house.

"In some cases, occupants are overcharged for minor repairs and then intimidated when they question the cost.

"Anybody who is pestered by unwanted cold callers should advise them that contact will be made with Trading Standards and if necessary the police."
