The driver of the car is reported to have left the scene and a police spokesman said inquiries into the incident are ongoing.

One witness commenting on Facebook said they had seen the driver get out his car and manhandle the victim before leaving the scene.

"Just seen a hit and run on Luton road," they wrote, "the man got out dragged the man to middle of road and drove off. Good job there are some good people about so we all stopped to help."
