An empty Wilko is set to become a new B&M.

The unit in Rainham Shopping Centre, just off the High Street, has been empty for months following the company going into administration.

It had been left unoccupied for so long a lake started forming within the shop owing to a leak inside the building.

And while plumbing problems have not plagued other stores in the precinct the lack of footfall usually brought by the pick ‘n’ mix retailer has hit traders.

Alison Tindall, who works for Ascot Flowers opposite, previously said: “The leak hasn’t affected us, but the store’s closure has.

“There’s not as much footfall now and it’s so dark when we lock up at night. You can’t see who’s about.

“We hope a new business moves in soon.”

And it seems the wishes of traders have now been granted with B&M poised to take over following a premises licence application to sell alcohol made to Gravesham and Medway Council’s Shared Licensing Service.

The notice read: “Take notice that B&M Retail Limited has made an application in accordance with the Licensing Act 2003 for a premises licence for 17 Rainham Shopping Centre.

“The application is for sale by retail of alcohol.

“Any person wishing to view details of an application may contact the Licensing Partnership.”

At present the nearest B&M is in Medway Street, Chatham.

The budget retailer has been approached for comment.
