A BMX track will be built in a park in Gillingham after plans were approved this week.

Councillors at Wednesday night’s planning meeting backed the project in Queen Elizabeth Fields in Castlemaine Avenue, despite some local objections.

Written objections included concerns about increased traffic and anti-social behaviour.

But planning officers have pointed out that most people using the track would probably arrive by bike and CCTV cameras would deter rowdiness. The CCTV will be monitored from the council’s main control room.

A grant of £25,000 has been secured from the government’s Local Growth Fund to help pay for the facility. The track will include different sections for varying abilities.
