Body pulled from the water at The Strand, Gillingham

The body of a woman in her 60s has been discovered at a riverside beauty spot.

Emergency crews were called to The Strand in Gillingham on Sunday where they cordoned off a slipway at the leisure park.

Police spokesman Lucy Hurdle said: "Kent Police was called at 11.57am on Sunday, February 28 to a report a body had been seen in the River Medway near The Strand in Gillingham.

"Officers attended, alongside crews from the South East Coast Ambulance Service and the Coastguard.

"The body of a woman in her 60s was subsequently retrieved from the water and her next of kin have been informed."

Keith Huddy was on his way to the sailing club at around noon when he saw police officers and paramedics at the scene.

Mr Huddy, 63, from Chatham, said: "There were quite a few people around walking and the police were keeping them away."

No suspicious circumstances have been identified and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
