Two cannabis farms have been unearthed by police after they were discovered at separate addresses.

Officers raided the two homes in Chatham and found scores of the plants on Tuesday.

They were called to Dale Street at 3.51am where more than 150 in various stages of growth were located.

But later the same day police stormed a home in Hilda Road where dozens of plants were found.

An investigation has been launched to find those responsible.

Officers have now issued advice to landlords who may be letting properties to organised crime groups to grow the drug without them knowing.

DS Gary Seamark said when homes are used for cultivation, they can often suffer thousands of pounds worth of damage and the risk of a blaze breaking out is "high".

"Before you let it is advisable to meet the tenants, get photo ID from them and check their references," he said.

"Be suspicious if you are offered six months rent in cash upfront. Ensure your property has outside lighting and cut back overhanging vegetation so the view of the house is clear.

"Once you have let the property speak with the neighbours and ask them to report any suspicious activity to you or the police.

"It is also important that you or your letting agent visits to the property regularly."

DS Seamark also gave advice on how to spot the signs of cannabis cultivation at homes, including pungent smells, windows being closed in summer and frequent visitors.
