Messenger cartoonist Royston Robertson has had one of his creations published on the cover of the Private Eye annual.

His work also features inside the satirical magazine’s yearly book, including one in response to the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris in January.

Mr Robertson, 47, was first published in Private Eye in 1998 and has since had cartoons in Reader’s Digest, The Spectator, Prospect, New Statesman, The Oldie and other publications around the world.

Mr Robertson said: “That’s the first time I’ve had one on the front page of the annual – because they only print one a year the chances of getting on there are quite slim. It is quite funny I have been on the back cover twice, down by the barcode. I’m quite pleased to be on the front.

“I find it hard to single out favourite cartoons, but one that I definitely look upon fondly is the Dog’s Pollocks from Private Eye last year, simply because it proved so popular with lots of people buying prints and cards of it.

One of Royston Robertson's favourite cartoons.

“One chap even commissioned me to redraw it, replacing the dog with his Airedale terrier.”
