Among the stranger candidates for this year's election is...a moggie.

Stan the cat will be aiming to give opponents paws for thought in his bid to win a seat in Parliament for the constituency of Gillingham and Rainham.

Among Remainer Stan's policies are promises to convert the Medway Tunnel into a giant cat flap, setting an army of cats upon the roof of Gillingham train station in order to remove the pigeons and freedom of movement in neighbours' gardens.

Stan is owned by anti-Brexit campaigner Peter Cook, who earlier this year penned an album of remain-themed songs titled Rage Against the Brexit Machine.

The Gillingham resident says he will represent Stan as his "cat whisperer" in his quest to get Gillingham and Rainham voting for his new party, UCAT.

He said: "Our Towns deserve better. Brexit will make it more likely that Medway falls into greater levels of deprivation and a sense of hopelessness.”

“UCAT is an alternative that will negotiate a Brexit deal which is kinder on pets and which sticks two paws up to Johnson and the likes of Jacob Rees-Moggy.

“The purpose of Stan the cat is to disrupt support for Boris Johnson and Brexit madness, which is gripping the country in spite of compelling evidence that it will make the residents of Medway poorer.

Peter has been rallying his supporters on his Facebook page Cats Against Brexit Mayhem which has almost 700 followers.

Stan will stand against Tory Rehman Chisthi, who has represented the constituency since 2010, and Labour's Cllr Andy Stamp.

Full details of candidates standing in the General Election will be known today, with a 4pm deadline for nominations.
