Drug addicts causing problems at The Brook in Chatham

One of the Medway's biggest car parks is being used by addicts who leave behind needles, blood and even human waste.

Although it is cleaned daily, visitors to The Brook in Chatham have told how they regularly find drugs paraphernalia.

The stairwell, which is connected to the Pentagon Shopping Centre, is a popular place for users.

One woman has told how she had to "step over" people on a regularly basis.

Lisa Chapman Wanstall said: “I’m absolutely disgusted I have to pay to park in the car park and witness people taking drugs every day.

“Some days I have to step over them, and the blood and paraphernalia is lying everywhere.”

The 558-space multi-storey, which is open every day, is used by Pentagon shoppers but is not the centre’s main car park.

It is owned by Medway Council, which says it is aware of the issue and has liaised with the police.

Another Brook user, who asked to remain anonymous, says the problem is getting out of control.

He said: “I see it every day. Needles, syringes, swabs, spoons, even human waste.

“You even see people doing it sometimes, but they just carry on.

"I’m sure people are aware of the situation, but nothing has been done.”

The council is appealing for visitors who are worried about the situation to get in touch.

Spokesman Jade Edwards said: “The Brook car park is cleaned every day by our contractors and is regularly patrolled by staff.

“We have also liaised with the police to make them aware of the issue.

“We would urge anyone who sees any drug paraphernalia not to touch it and instead report it to us immediately so we can arrange for the items to be removed as soon as possible."
