Costa Coffee is set to expand its premises in Gillingham High Street, if planners give a new application the green light.

Plans submitted to Medway Council propose to convert the ground floor of the neighbouring unit - formerly Well Pharmacy - into a seating area for the coffee shop, and to convert the first floors of each of the neighbouring units into flats.

The application - made by Biljit Brar - also includes details of illuminated signs, new access arrangements for the flats, and new windows.

A planning statement explained the current first floor of Costa Coffee seating area would be effectively moved into the neighbouring unit's ground floor.

It added: "The existing windows above unit 133 High Street will be retained, with the new extension to the Costa Coffee maintaining the existing shopfront (unit 135) on the ground floor.

"The aesthetics of the proposed extension are identical in style to that of the rest of the building next to it and below, and as such blend seamlessly into the surrounding environment. There is no change to the heights of the existing building.

"As such, this proposal will therefore not be of detriment to any surrounding amenity."
